Travel:
There are
many ways of getting to the Yucatan. Driving is one way and a
number of winter visitors, including Bonnie and Bill, take this
leisurely approach getting to Merida.
Currently
the only way to arrive at Merida driving is the all overland route
crossing the US- Mexican border and then traversing Mexico along
the Gulf of Mexico or further inland. There have been continuing
plans to initiate a passenger and car ferry service from Tampa,
Florida to Port of Progreso, 20 miles (30km) north of Merida.
This service was instituted briefly and was suspended after 3
months of operation. There appears to be plans to reinstate this
service. The cost and commencement date have not been established
but it would certainly save considerable driving time for those
coming from Eastern and Central Canada and from the Eastern part
of U.S.A. We'll keep you posted on any new developments.
Air Transportation:
Regularly
scheduled airlines provide the most flexibility and availability
of flights. Mexicana Airlines, AeroMexico, Delta, Continental,
American and others provide service to the Yucatan.
Cancun, which
is only 180 miles (300 km) away, has a major international airport
with services arriving from all over the world. It is also the
destination for many charter flights operating all-inclusive tours,
some of which will offer low rates for "air only" service.
Charter flights are usually for set periods of 7, 14 or
21 days with arrivals and departures usually on the weekends.
There is frequent bus service from Cancun to Merida at low cost.
